The stark hand

The stark handIt is an artificial hand which is specially design for NASA. It moves easily and works like an electronic hand. The story behind the invention is like this:

A boy named Dave Vogt, when born has not his left hand by nature. A scientist Stark created an electronic hand for him and the hand has three knuckles (Which have a joint of a finger when the fist is closed). These knuckles can be bent according to the wish of the Vogt and he may catch the things easily. Interesting thing is that the Vogt may open all of his fingers freely by the moment of his shoulder that triggers a lever to extract. This artificial hand is really magical, because the Vogt may grip an egg with politeness and as well as drag a heavy chair.

When Vogt used this hand a ball is thrown towards him, he caught the ball with his artificial hand and certified that he is no more disabled and may do his work like a normal person.

A company named Edison Nation helps the inventors to develop their ideas selected the electronic hand for commercial production.

Dynamic eye sunglasses

Dynamic eye sunglassesWhen a doctor Chris Mullin used to go to his laboratory 35 miles away from his house, the sunrays directly hit his eyes. The high penetrating rays cause headaches and give him trouble to see properly. Thus he decided to make a sunglass that may block the sunrays and protect his eyes. In 2002 he got a chance to work over his idea.

As lens material, he used a liquid crystal. The liquid crystal doesn’t give any obstruction to see through as a sunglass lens. Then he added a sensor on the bridge of the nose which finds limelight and gives a signal to a microcontroller attached nearby. The microcontroller reacts and gives instruction to the liquid-crystal lens to produce a 6 mm black square in front of the eyes to block the limelight. Surprisingly the square moves with the glass wearer to block the source of limelight at all the angles, but still gives a gap on the surroundings to let see properly.

Mullin is now developing an elastically plastic-based LCD, so that the product may be lighter and damage proof to sale in market on commercial scale.

The U.S Air Force has appreciated Mullin work and has funded in his project. Now he is working on developing a sunglass for soldiers & fighter pilots. Mullin claims that troops may go in high-noon sun onto the other place without any harm in illumination. The sight of the sunglass wearer will not be damaged. They may be able to see at the very moment after walking into sun. The scientist doctor making a plan to sell the idea to any of the big manufacturer of sunglass, so that they produce this Dynamic Eye shades commercially.

Magical print brush

It is not surprising that we have entered in a magical era. Everyday a new invention is coming in market and the making the life of human being easy & comfort. For example, a miniature inkjet can print on a uniform surface with a slight movement of hand. Can you imagine that when anyone moves his hand over the paper, this magical device print a page within 10 seconds.

The engineer of Stockholm, Sweden Alex Breton has designed this magical print brush. This brush is a gadget which can be held by hand and weigh only 8.8-ounce. Inkjets are use in it. Its optics is like a computer mouse and has navigation software for printing. It prints uploaded images and reading material on an even surface like plastic, fabric, paper and wood like a computer than a printer.

When the user move the print brush on a sheet of paper, the optical sensors take the route line velocity and way of the printer related to the page. There is a controller in it which equalizes the location align to a pixel map of the document and throws algorithms to anticipate which pixel to print next.

The designer developed this device in two years, but it took near about 10 years to get the fine result. He and his team experts refined the navigation system on every new edition. Interesting thing is that they added color which needed writing a set of algorithms to develop rapidly the ink combinations required to produce16 million various shades. Print brush with a built-in camera for taking moment’s photo print will come in the market by the next year. Certainly it will be the world’s smallest printer.

Medical mirror

It astonishes that when the heart beats, our face reflects off the light which changes after every moment. The change in moments is captured by a webcam in a monitor placed behind a two way mirror. A computer converts the light data into a heart rate reading.

Actually the heart beats without any pause and delivers a pulse of blood from the blood vessels. Blood absorbs light, but when more of it runs in the vessels, less of the light striking your skin comes back. Astonishingly a webcam pick up these minor fluctuations in the light rays which are coming back, whereas a computer program converts the data into a heart-rate reading. The system may be used to assess other vitals also, as blood-oxygen saturation and respiratory rate   which should broaden its appeal. This indicates the patient’s inner health.

Its inventor Poh is making a plan to introduce the mirror in market, at the end of his academic education. He claims that when people will use it they may say that it identifies my creation.

Solar PowerA great scientist claims that the solar energy will lead entirely in future. That will be a great need of this planet in the next coming 20 years. Now we could imagine our self the importance of this valuable energy, because we are now in disaster and facing energy crises. The reservoirs of gas, coal and petroleum is going to be empty. At last we have to search the substitute of it.

There is 10,000 times more sunlight than we need to meet 100 percent of our energy needs and the technology needed for collecting and storing it is about to emerge as the field of solar energy is going to advance.

Solar to compete in the next five years

At this time we have not any big planning for accumulating the solar and wind energy. But after seeing the statics of the future, we are serious and doing a valuable research and planning to store these energies. At present supply about 1 percent of the world’s energy needs, but advances in technology are about to expand with the introduction of nano-engineered materials for solar panel  making them more efficient, lighter and easier to install and take the demanding  benefits.

The researchers said that we are not that far away from a tipping point where energy from solar will be economically competitive with fossil fuels and   it could happen in the next 5 years.

In this connection other technologies which will be helpful are solar concentrators, made of huge mirrors that absorb very large amount of sunlight onto a small steam turbine. The energy can be stored by using nano-engineered fuel cells which will be available in the market soon.

You could create hydrogen or hydrogen-based fuels from the energy produced by solar panels and then use that to create for fuel cells.

Other troublesome challenges

Experts think that facing the energy challenge and the other troublesome challenges of the 21st century is simply important to our survival on this planet. Other challenges are:

1-         To clean water.

2-         Producing better medicines.

3-         Securing cyberspace.

4-         Improvement in practical reality.

The big and useful inventions gave us the green revolution that increased the production of food   as world population grew. The distribution of safe water and electricity, improved health generated an upgraded standard of living for everyone.

However, now the world faces some dark results of these advancements which are the threat of a security disaster, if nuclear and biological weapons fall into the wrong and fanatic hands.

More solutions to upcoming challenges

Other tech solutions for the new century’s big challenges include:

1-         Proper monitoring of nuclear weapons components to prevent them from getting in the hands of fanatic.

2-         Make an advance in rapid responses to possible bio-weapons attacks.

3-         Advances in genetic engineering to address the problem of drug-resistant viruses and bacteria, and to create personalized medicine.

4-         Purification of water to meet the demand of shortage of drinking healthy water.

The policy which will be run in the 21st century challenges plan, reveal a more enlightened understanding of role of science and technology in general. This idea is being developed in the context of a globalized world, even though the proposals have been developed in world.

Now OLEDs! Is coming

The flexible organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) has been developed, which may lead to a television as thin as common magazine and so much flexible that it may be roll as a sheet of paper!

OLEDs have a thin layer of light producing organic molecules coated on a glass surface which gives out light when an electric supply is given to it. Scientists are trying to make the television screen of such materials. It will be interesting to know that the screens made of this material do not need back light and have a nice black/white contrast than liquid crystal. A very much wide television of this material will consume less electricity in comparison to the normal smaller televisions.

The screen made of OLEDs material can be printed onto flexible surface by using an ink jet printer. In this way the total cost will be reduced than the liquid crystal screens.

If OLEDS may be printed on textiles, they may lead to illuminated dresses which will give out different changing shades of light. The dresses will be supplied electrical power by small batteries that may be put in pockets. A big change may be expected in electronics and textile as well if the material is available in the market. OLEDs can enlighten electronic displays on carpets, TVs, textiles, and curtain. The ladies of future will surely shine and sparkle with the help of this material.

Mending a broken heart!

This has been detected that when anybody face a heart attack, he receives a heavy damage. The tissues of the affected area of the heart may die. It is also a fact that damage tissues can not be mending. However efforts are going on in this regard to use stem cells for repair of the damaged areas.

Recently the engineers of Brown University are working with scientists of India, have developed a patch made of carbon nanofibers to repair the damaged areas after heart attack. Surprisingly this patch produced by two countries scientists provides flexibility, so that it may expand and contract accordingly with the users’ heart.

When this patch is covered over the damaged tissues, the electrical signals may be transmitted through it, because it is a best conductor of electricity. It is seeded with heart cells which improved very fast on the patch, with the growth of neurons.

Quickly charged batteries

When a researcher observed that the electrically charged batteries take very much time, hence produce a problem. He solved this problem by refilling the batteries with the old charged battery fluid.

The fluid of discharged battery will be pumped out and newly charged fluid may be filled in no time. The use of these new batteries will be better in comparison to the heavy and expensive batteries. The new batteries will be lighter and cheaper, because a new liquid has been produced which is more affective than the old batteries.
